Tom Coates Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

CBT Therapist with Lived Experience

CBT therapy for individuals struggling with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), unwanted intrusive thoughts, and anxiety — delivered with compassion, expertise, and genuine understanding.

I’m a CBT Therapist specialising in evidence-based treatment for OCD and intrusive thoughts. Alongside my professional training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), my own lived experience of OCD, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts strongly informs my work. This allows me to offer therapy that is both clinically effective and deeply validating.

I am the Clinical Director of The Wellbeing Team LTD, a service made up of BABCP-accredited CBT Psychotherapists. We provide therapy for OCD, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, depression, and trauma, with sessions available online or face to face.

We understand how frightening and isolating intrusive thoughts can feel — particularly when you worry about what they might “mean.” At The Wellbeing Team, we offer a confidential, non-judgemental space where you can speak openly, reduce compulsions, and learn to respond to thoughts in a healthier, more freeing way.

In addition to therapy, we provide helpful blog articles and self-help resources focused on OCD and intrusive thoughts, designed to support understanding and recovery both inside and outside of sessions.

If you’re struggling with OCD or intrusive thoughts, help is available. You’re warmly invited to take the first step by arranging a free CBT consultation.

BABCP Accredited Psychotherapists

What is a BABCP Accredited Psychotherapist?

BABCP stands for the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies. It is the leading UK professional organisation that focuses on the promotion, development, and dissemination of behavioural and cognitive psychotherapies.

All of our CBT therapists are fully BABCP Accredited, which means that they meet rigorous standards in cognitive and behavioural therapies. Accreditation is reviewed every 12 months and signals a therapist’s commitment to ongoing development and their adherence to ethical standards.

How can we help?

If you’re struggling with unwanted intrusive thoughts, constant doubt, reassurance-seeking, or compulsive behaviours, you may be wondering whether therapy could help — or feeling unsure about taking that first step.

Many people with OCD or intrusive thoughts worry about what their thoughts might “mean,” fear being misunderstood, or feel overwhelmed by the idea of talking to someone about them or their content. These concerns are common, and they often keep people stuck for longer than they need to be.

At The Wellbeing Team LTD, we understand how distressing and isolating OCD and intrusive thoughts can feel. Therapy offers a supportive, confidential space to explore these experiences safely and without judgement. Rather than focusing on getting rid of thoughts, evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you understand why intrusive thoughts occur, how compulsions and mental checking keep them going, and how to respond differently so they lose their power.

CBT is a structured, collaborative talking therapy that recognises the close connection between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. In OCD, this approach is particularly effective in helping people break free from cycles of fear, avoidance, and reassurance-seeking that can dominate daily life.

We also integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles, which focus on changing your relationship with intrusive thoughts, building tolerance for uncertainty, and helping you move towards a life guided by your values rather than your fears.

Working together with your therapist, you’ll develop a clearer understanding of your specific OCD patterns while also recognising your existing strengths and resilience. Your therapy goals will guide a personalised, evidence-based treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include practical strategies to reduce compulsions, build tolerance for uncertainty, and help you live more in line with your values — rather than your fears.

Therapy progresses at a pace that feels manageable for you. There is no pressure, judgement, or expectation — only compassion, collaboration, and support as you work towards greater freedom from OCD and intrusive thoughts.

If you’re not quite ready for therapy, or you’d prefer something you can read and reflect on in your own time, we also offer a dedicated eBook focused on unwanted intrusive thoughts. This resource explains why intrusive thoughts happen, why they don’t reflect who you are, and how to begin responding to them in a healthier way. Many people find this a helpful first step — whether as preparation for therapy or as standalone support.

When you feel ready, help is available. Contact us to arrange a free CBT consultation and explore whether therapy feels right for you.
